Wu Zetian is remembered as the only woman in the history of China to assume the title of Empress Regnant.
She first entered the Tang palace at 13 and became one of the concubines of Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty. After his death, she was expected to leave and become a Buddhist nun, like all childless concubines of the Emperor used to do; but the new Empress, Wang, wife to Emperor Taizong’s son and successor, Emperor Gaozong, wanted a beautiful concubine to distract the Emperor’s attentions towards Conosort Xiao, wich the Empress considered as her enemy.
Long story short? Both Empress Wang and Consort Xiao were killed, and it was Wu that was made empress.
As Empress, Wu became soon known for being ruthless in the struggle to gain power: even her own sons and daughter were killed or deposed until she was made Empress in her own right, putting an end to the Tang dynasty and establishing the Zhou dynasty.
Her uncommon strength and beauty were not the only things for which she is remembered. She was a capable and attentive ruler, with the capacity of choosing the right position for each Official under her command as for them to better serve her in her role of sovereign.
